Editor's Note: The Kimberley region of Australia boasts some of the most wonderful rock formations, rock art, and natural beauty on this earth. After visiting this magnificent region so many times, I can understand the inspiration behind this exhibition- that's for sure!
In his latest exhibition of ‘rockscapes’, titled Australia Rocks, renown cityscape and landscape artist Arthur Ted Powell conjures up memories of his encounters with some of Australia’s strange rocky outcrops. First on a painting trip to the Kimberley Ranges of Western Australia in 1989 with the late great Australian landscape painter Clifton Pugh AO (1924-1990), and later at rock sites in his home state of Victoria.
Some of the rocks that have rocked his imagination are the Pinnacles, Bungle Bungles in Western Australia and Mungo, Hanging Rock, and hundreds of ancient granite rock formations closer to home in the Brisbane Ranges of Victoria. On show are large and small scale works in acrylic paint on paper, oil and polymer on canvas, and monoprin.
The exhibition Australia Rocks is Powell’s thirteenth solo show and fifth on the theme of outback Australia. The exhibition coincides with a show of Hong Kong cityscapes at the Nockart Gallery Hong Kong. Powell’s work features in Fragrant Impressions alongside prominent artists Elisabeth Cummings, Michael Nock, Steve Lopes, Euan Macleod, Terry Batt, Luke Sciberras and Peter Godwin.
Opening the show ‘Australia Rocks’ on 25 July is geologist Dr. Alastair Tait from Monash University who knows a lot about art and rocks. Recently, he led an expedition to the Nullarbor and found a field of alien rocks, or meteorites, that fell to Earth in the last 40,000 years. In an earlier work life Alistair was an artist and video game designer.
According to Arthur Ted Powell "I recall the awe I felt as an Englishman trying to comprehend the size and age of these huge inert granite piles scattered before me like giant coloured marbles frozen in time. I’ve been a rock fan
ever since, and their alien-ness remains a major theme in my painting.
